Jumu'ah Sohbet: 13 September 2024
This Sohbet will take you on a proverbial flying carpet through the past, present, and future. With Allah, we go, Bismillah!
#1. We are living such turbulent times in our modern era!:
However, intellectuals Mehdi Hassan and Rob Delayney advised those of us deflated by man's state of affairs: "Don't be pessimistic about the future because this is your moment to relive history." Implying that at some point in our history, this sense of apocalyptic demise has been experienced before. Look, despite COVID, Climate change and War, they are continuing to make my accident old news 😅
youtube
Spiritually, Hazrat Jalaluddeen Rumi (RA) says: "Lovers find secret places inside this violent world where they make transactions with beauty." I couldn't agree more because what keeps us grounded, apart from the maddening crowds, is our spiritual connection through our Tariqa (spiritual school) that keeps us conscious of the truth and reality of La ilaha illalah (There is no god but God / Allah)! We are therefore programmed to see the positivity and beauty of Allah, no matter how much human ugliness is projected around us. Shukran Ya Allah (Divine gratitude)!
#2. We just passed the 6th of Rabi ul-Awwal which marks the Wisaal (Divine meeting) or Urs (Divine wedding) of the spirtual monarch of our country, Hazrat Shaykh Sayed Ahmed Badsha Peer (RA). His resting place was round the corner from where I worked pre-accident, and at a particularly sad time in my life, his spiritual solace carried me through it! In the middle of Durban's humble inner-city within a multiracial cemetry during a racist passage of South African history itself. Subhana'Allah (Divine glory)!:
Tumblr media
Hazrat Badsha Peer (RA) arrived in Durban from South India as an indentured labourer in 1860 and was recognised by the British authorities as a spiritual personality and discharged of his duties. I remember telling visitors that his legacy as an indentured labourer was that his plot of sugarcane was always harvested at the end of the work day, without him having to sweat, were some of his mystical abilities. He passed away in 1894 in the precinct of the Grey Street Juma Masjid and buried in the Brook Street Muslim Cemetery. He was from amongst the Majzoob category of Sufis, who are totally drowned in the love of Allah, making them unaware of their own physical conditions. Due to this, people never recognised his spiritual position! It was in 1895 upon the arrival of Hazrat Soofie Saheb (RA) that in pure Sufi ethic, he first went to pay homage to the great Awliya (Friend of Allah) of this country. And, in doing so, located the grave of Hazrat Badsha Peer (RA), making it known for the first time that here lies "BADSHA PEER" (A King amongst Spirtual Guides)! [Chishty Sabiree Jahangiri Khanqa and Research Centre]
This was at a time when I was not even a Sufi murid (follower). As the Sufi adage goes, when the student is ready, the teacher appears. Shukran Ya Allah that he did, in the form of Shaykh Taner Ansari of Allahistan! It is also where your Mimi's Ummi is laid to rest with Allah in this world. Allah blessed your Mama and me with Mimi's blessed presence in our lives where she sought me out at the nearby offices and spiritually enlivened my consciousness of the blessing round my corner. Allah, if Hazrat Badsha Peer (RA) was involved in the spiritual mechanics of keeping me alive after a 2-month coma as it was while I still worked there, please convey Your love and eternal gratitude on my behalf:
Ya Shakur Ya Wadud!
#3. Anne (our spiritual mother) asked us to contemplate on the English translated version of Sura 89 of the Chronological Edition of the Qur'an as renewed by our Tariqa, Al-e Imran (The Family of Imran). I couldn't stop the outpouring of insights and awe within me towards Allah's words in those 200 verses. For example, I will just share 3:
- V4: Allah as the mighty establisher of consequences. (Yes, us human beings with free will must be made to feel the consequences of our choices!)
- V7: Some messages of the Qur'an are clear, but others are allegorical. Allegorical means containing a moral or hidden meaning. (As a past Qur'anic Arabic student herself, I had felt that the Qur'an is either too simplistic or too deep which drove me to keep trying to connect to it or altogether evade it! Until, unexpectedly and gloriously, did our Tariqa delve into it as richly as it did, where at virtually every other verse I am compelled to contemplate!)
- V86: The community of disbelievers who reject truth after it has come to them! (Like extremist Jews and extremist Christians that firmly hold onto their forefathers' practices! But, Islam was the most recent of Abrahamic religions, which affirmed their paths and with reasoned caveats. Another reason the community of the middle path [ummatan wasatan] makes more sense, if you ask me):
In conclusion, we enter Yuwm un-Nabi, which is an annual celebration of the birth of Rahmatul lil 'Alameen (Mercy of the worlds), our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)! Insha'Allah, it is a well-executed success as planned, which unites us deeper:
Ya Ghalib Ya Azim (Yearning Allah's ability to succeed)
Ya Wadud Ya Salaam Ya Jami Ya Nafi (and Allah's love, peace and unity in goodness)

A Sohbet recording of the Treshold Society with reflections on a Ghazel of Hafiz, the philosopher’s stone of love and the secret of Sufi Alchemy, the Alchemy of the Heart.
THE ACADEMY OF REALIZATION
You who are not yet aware, become the possessor of awareness. If you haven't traveled, how can you be a guide? In the Academy of Realization, pay attention to the adept of love, so that one day, O son, you may become a father. Wash your hands of the cheap metals of existence like the mature, so that you may find the philosopher's Stone of love and be gold yourself. Sleeping and eating has kept you far away from your true level. You will come to yourself when you give up sleeping and eating. If the light of the love of truth falls on your heart and soul, you will be more beautiful than the sun of the skies. For one moment drown yourself in the sea of God, don't think the seven seas will wet a single hair of yours. From head to toe you will become the light of God when you lose yourself on his resplendent road. Once God's face becomes the only thing you see, you will surely become a master of vision. When the basis of your existence is overthrown, empty your heart, for you will also be overthrown. O Hafiz, if your head is set on the climax of union, be the dust on the threshold of those who can see.
Translated By Kabir Helminski
***
“Wash your hands of the cheap metals of existence like the mature, so that you may find the philosopher’s Stone of love and become gold yourself.”
The ghazel describes a quite extraordinary process and experience of transformation, a whole spiritual teaching. Washing our hands of what is false and unreal, the Sufi transforms through love. One who has travelled a certain road far enough will have experiences to associate with the lines of this poem.
We deepen in awareness so that our hearts become capable of experiencing the Divine Presence, of what is truly real, the light of God. The lover of truth cultivates this experience, built on very reliable practices. We learn to open up a resonance with the Divine and with the Masters of Love.
To become the light of God is to pass through nothingness. It is beautiful to live creatively, with purpose, knowing that the best we can be is a reflector of some Infinite Unknown. We learn to increasingly trust this more than what we thought was ourselves.

Bismillahir Rahman nir Raheem SUFISM : Sufism is the way of purifying the heart from bad manners and characteristics under the guidance of a Sheikh. _What is a Sheikh? A Sheikh is someone who has inherited what the prophets brought and who is authorized to convey these teachings and secrets to those who take his hand as teacher. A true Sheikh is the one that has mastered his lower self's bad characteristics through devotion and sincerity towards His Lord. For that reason he is able to guide his students to mastery of their own lower selves, opening the way to reach unlimited potential of their spiritual realities. _How does one reach spiritual levels in Sufism? The main methods of attaining spiritual progress in Sufism are: _1 . Following the guidance and instructions of an authorized Sheikh or guide. _2 . Performing dhikr, the remembrance of your Lord through reciting his Holy Names and Attributes, glorifying Him and praising the Creator of all. _3 . Attending the advice and dhikr gatherings held in the presence of the Sheikh or his representative; sitting together, praying together, welcoming all that come to praise their Lord. _How is Sufism related to Islam? It is the path of spirituality that exists in Islam. Its meaning is: 1 . Seeking the pleasure of God 2 . Love and peace with one's self 3 . Harmony with all creations (mankind, animals, and nature) *4* . To be dressed with the beautiful attributes of Prophets and Saints what does Islam mean? Islam means submitting to God's Will and accepting that there is no God but one God and Muhammad is the Messenger of God, peace and blessings upon him, as are Jesus, Moses, Abraham, Noah and Adam, peace be upon them all. What is faith according to Islam? Faith is believing in: 1 . One God 2 . In the existence of spiritual beings known as angels 3 . In the revelations of God (the Testaments), the Psalms revealed to David, the Torah sent down to Moses, the New Testament brought to Jesus and the Last Testament, Qur'an brought to Muhammad (peace be upon them all) 4 . all the prophets that were sent as mercy to mankind 5 . The Judgement Day and Resurrection 6. The Divine Decree (destiny) _How does Islam view other religions? 1 . All are vehicles and a path to God's Divine Presence; 2 . According to Islam, all religions are originally from God the Exalted. With time and man's weakness, most religions were distorted from their original truth and adopted practicing of idol- worship or other wrong beliefs, which turned people away from worship and adoration of the one true God. 3. You will find the essence of other religions embodied in the beliefs of Islam. How does one enter Islam? One enters Islam by believing in one's heart in the existence of One Lord and believing in Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him) as the last of the Prophets that the Lord has sent throughout history. _Sohbet : Companionship in conversation, association The English language is often inadequate when it comes to describing spiritual states of mind. Sohbet, in Sufism, is a spiritual transaction between teacher and student which relies on ancient oral storytelling traditions and practices. Mystical knowledge and Devotional Love is transmitted during Sohbet in such a way that it attempts to circumvent the knots of the rational mind and connect the hearts of the seekers. Sohbet can be understood as a spiritual dialogue, a cleansing of the soul and a meeting of the hearts. From the metaphysical to the very physical, Sohbets help us reflect on the events of our everyday lives and guide us in our search for a sense of unity and security. “Stay close to any sounds that make you glad you are alive.” Hafiz ~ _The Sufis say: “There are three ways to relate to the Divine: One is Prayer, a step up from that is Meditation, and a step up from that is Sohbet.” What Sufi mystics mean by sohbet is difficult to translate in English. Simply put, it means conversation of ‘a totally different nature’. It is conversation between friends of spirit and heart, it is a deep listening and transmission of heart as well. Everything in the created cosmos is also in ceaseless conversation, in endless symbiosis and those with attuned ears of the inner heart are able to listen to them.
True sohbets are so powerful that it can bring a much deeper realization in short space of time, than years of prayers or meditation alone. On meditation being a step up from prayer, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “One hour’s meditation on the work of the Creator is better than seventy years of The prayer.”
The Sufi path values sohbet and thus listening deeply and directly from a sufi master / enlightened one is emphasized on the path. Sohbet carry the powerful seed of what Far Eastern spirituality calls ‘Satori’ or sudden enlightenment. The name and idea of ancient Hindu sacred text the Upanishad is also an idea of ‘sohbet‘ as well. Upanishad means ’sitting down near’ an enlightened spiritual master or guru in order to listen and to receive. In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Milarepa (born, Mila Thöpaga meaning ‘a joy to hear’), the most famous mystic saint of Tibet, yogi, wanderer and much loved poet of eleventh century is often famously depicted with one hand cupped behind his ear. In Buddhist iconography he is as someone who is always listening deeply, symbolizing Milarepa’s deep listening to the great voice of the cosmos, of the inner song of existence. On the value of listening ‘The Tibetan Book of the Dead’ calls it Great Liberation through Hearing. Jesus the Annointed One said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” - Mark 4:9 “It is to those who are worthy of (hearing and understanding) my mysteries that I tell my mysteries.” Christ, The Gospel of Thomas ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says ...’ - Revelation 2:7, 3:22
_Sohbet is a spiritual conversation from an enlightened soul. In the practice of sohbet, teachings are transmitted from teacher to students through storytelling, presence, and sacred space. A sohbet can encompass the physical and mundane or the metaphysical and sublime. Al-Fatihah

Jumu'ah Sohbet: 6 September 2024
Alhamdulillah we have entered South African Spring. More importantly, we have entered Rabi' al-Awwal which is the month in the Islamic calendar that marks the birth of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Shukran Ya Allah (Divine gratitude) to the count of infinity, and Bismillah (And in that Divine name):
#1. Shaykh Nishaat, our heartsmith, had us spellbound as he asked us soul searing questions and made statements like:
- When we are looking around ourselves, what eyes are we using to do that? In fact, almost everything happens without consciousness!
- We constantly have to check that what is negatively mirrored in the world is not a reflection of ourselves.
- There is so much information and knowledge out there but how much of what we do is from the Source of us? Instead, how much of what we process about the world, is shaped by our "tribe"?
- Shaykh Taner's Qur'an translation into English, as a 9-and-half year mission, exists for us to deeply understand and connect with Allah's guidance. However, many of us remain uninspired, wrapped, and enveloped in the aura of our egos!
- As we approach the beautiful month in which our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born, Allah sent him as Rahmatul lil-'Alameen (Mercy to the worlds). This mirrors the exact song that we've been inspired to sing, by our Qari Zardad of Qurtuba Online Islamic Studies, for Yawn un-Nabi (an annual festival marking his blessed birthday) with our Ilahi band, Subhana'Allah (Divine glory) for sweet serendipity!
youtube
#2. On a Saturday Sohbet, Anne (our spiritual mother) again made us appreciate the benefits of her motherly instincts while explaining some of our key Tariqa functions:
- About our Shaykh Taner's first Urs, she tearfully reflected that she felt unimaginable love and joy after her initial sadness. As we were all doing Zikr of Allah joyously, followed by all the meals that served as our signature of the 'Eating Tariqa'!
- She remarked on the irony of mankind where her initial idea of honoring Shaykh Taner in a Mausoleum was not locally permitted! But, she encountered a local Buddhist 'Shrine', which was permitted and significantly bigger in size than our initial plan for a Mausoleum. As a multinational Tariqa, we are accustomed to lost-in-translation, of course! 😅
- She also said that we have both biological and spiritual family. Our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasised the importance of our blood relatives, and even if you have a connection as thin as a cotton thread, if they pull, you must go. Just as when you pull on them, you hope that they'll come! Our spiritual family obligations are that we work for and follow Allah. We have personal and congregational Zikrs of equal merit and purpose.
- We are called upon to serve Allah in the Tariqa where we're training and learning as we serve by being out of our comfort zones. We should be able to work with each other, no matter what!
- In fact, helping people is more preferable to doing all our daily assignments perfectly every day! More importantly, our service doesn't involve politics, relationships, and business!
- She even compassionately urged us to find when we feel Allah the most to determine the ideal circulatory rhythm in ourselves to offer our personal daily assignments. This is after I realised that mornings wear me out, and instead when I am on my Rife treatment (my perceivable low-energy electromagnetic waves), I am the most connected to not only a source of healing but to our Shaykh Taner and our Silsila (spiritual chain). Our school of complementary health has complete faith in this subtle form of healing.
- In our Tariqa, we don't compare lessons or ourselves because we don't know the other's inner situation.
- Knowledge is important, but self-knowledge or self-awareness is even more important. Here, we fondly remember a Hadith (saying of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)): Whoever knows himself knows his Lord!
#3. Lastly was an exchange between our Shaykh Taner and Anne. It described the palpable purpose we gain in the practice of Zikr as a salvation. As we keep doing Zikr, we get out of the way, what I joyously describe as managing to drown out the ever-pervasive nafs, and naturally connecting to Allah. It was likened to filling the petrol tank of a car or our bodies with energy gained from food. Similarly, with Zikr, our beings are replenished and go forward in the spiritual world.
With gratitude, we end our Jumu'ah Sohbet. We yearn our beloved Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) team-spirit as Mahfouz embarks on his first Cricket Match of the year, and his love, as Muntaha extends her love to Adam and baby Zaynab for a play date, during that time.
Ya Wadud Ya Salaam Ya Jami Ya Nafi (Yearning Allah's love, peace and unity in goodness)
Ya Wadud (and more of Allah's love!)
